Catalan, unique in Europe
Catalan, while having some of the characteristics of a minority language, is different from others for various reasons that place it amongst the European languages of medium population. It is unique:
- Because of its legal status. It is official in Andorra and, along with Castilian, in three Spanish autonomous communities with parliaments that debate and pass laws in Catalan, in the exercise of their exclusive powers.
- Because of its demography. It is the seventh language of the European Union. The number of people who speak it is higher than the number of people who speak Finnish or Danish and comparable to the number of people who speak Swedish, Greek or Portuguese in Europe.
- Because of its sociolinguistic situation. It has been used uninterruptedly and is passed on from one generation to another with normality.
- Because of its linguistic baggage. The language is fully codified, normalised and standardised with complete academic consensus. Its linguistic resources and studies of grammar, lexicography, dialectology, terminology, language history, etc. are comparable with those of the main Latin languages.
- Because of its cultural and literary tradition. Texts have been written in Catalan, uninterruptedly, since the twelfth century. There are currently more than 1,200 living literary authors. During the academic year 2003-2004 there were 93 readerships in Catalan in universities on the five continents, outside the Catalan linguistic domain, with a total of 3,383 students.
- Because of its cultural dynamics. It is the vehicular language at all levels of teaching, from infants' schools to university; 10 daily newspapers, 30 weeklies and more than 200 local publications appear in Catalan; it has various television channels and dozens of radio stations - which occupy the first places in audience figures in Catalonia; more than 7,000 books a year are published in Catalan; it has some 28,000 web sites on the Internet, etc.
Knowledge of Catalan
Knowledge of the language in the areas where it is native varies due to the range of historical and political circumstances. The latest figures on the degree of linguistic knowledge suggest that the number of people who can speak it is about 7,300,000 and of those who can understand it about 9,800,000.
